Tung oil, also referred to as China wood oil, is an entirely natural wood oil derived from pressing the seeds of the tung nut (from the tung tree). When exposed to air, Tung oil naturally hardens through a process called polymerization. The resulting coating is transparent, resistant to yellowing, and water-resistant. It imparts a beautiful finish that ages better than skin finishes. Pure Tung oil is safe for use on wooden toys (meeting EN71 compliance) and kitchen woodwork that comes into contact with food.

Tips for Applying Pure Tung Oil:
Surface Preparation: Ensure the surface is clean and dry before applying Tung oil.
Application Method: Mix Tung oil with a solvent (such as d-limonene, or turpentine) in a 50/50 ratio. Rub or brush the oil onto the timber, applying lighter coats.
Coat Application: Apply three coats, waiting 24 hours between each coat. Buff firmly to achieve even coverage.
Drying Time: Tung oil takes approximately 24 hours to dry between coats, and full curing can take up to 4 weeks.
Maintenance: Reapply a light coat every 12 months to maintain the timber’s appearance. No sanding is necessary for damaged areas; simply reapply as needed.
Remember to follow safety precautions, such as avoiding ingestion, and ensure proper cleanup after use. Hanging out any rags or soaking them in water helps prevent combustion risks.
